About Tincan

Tincan is a simple chat and voice chat application that empowers users to host their own servers. Users can implement self-managed encryption to encrypt messages with AES and PGP protocols. Signup is very simple and only requires an email address to fetch a verification code.

The Tincan Server application is easy to use and configure. With intuitive built-in commands and a config file that's easy to modify, you'll find managing your own server to be relatively easy.

Q&A

Q. How do I exchange keys?

A. There is no automatic key exchange protocol built-in to Tincan or Tincan Server. A key exchange protocol creates a central point of interception or failure. While this does impose an additional step for groups and communities, it also allows a greater deal of opsec if desired. This means a server host enabling AES encryption could simply create a password protected link to download the server's key for other users, or they could go as far as only sharing keys in person on a USB stick. It's entirely up to them.

Q. Do I need to pay to list a server?
A. No. The server directory is totally optional for people that want to host public servers. You can run a server and share your public IP and port with people and they can manually connect.

Q. Why do I need an account?

A. We want enough of a barrier to prevent spam and bots in order to keep things social and friendly, but not invasive to privacy. Creating an account requires a verification code from an email, no phone number or additional information is collected.

Q. What if I find a public server engaged in nefarious activity?

A. Our public directory is akin to a phonebook or the Yellowpages if you will. If you find a server in the public directory is engaged in activities that violate US law, you are encouraged to report it to us and we will take steps to investigate. Public servers on our directory that violate US law are subject to removal from the directory.

Q. Does Tincan store my message history as a user or server operator?

A. No, at no point in a message's lifecycle do we ever transmit or store any data or information. Messages are stored by Tincan Server in a local database, and server operators can toggle whether messages are stored in an encrypted state or not.

Q. Does Tincan collect any information on users?

A. No, nothing beyond an email to collect a verification code.

Q. Why do I pay in cryptocurrency to list on the public directory?

A. We want Tincan to be accessible to all people, no matter the national boundary. Cryptocurrency as a payment option ensures people living in places where there are restrictions can still have access to free and open communication.
